BCU 1 Star Start Kayaking Course


In response to popular demand we will now be running BCU 1 star kayaking courses.

The course is run over a weekend from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm and covers the basics of setting up your kit, paddling forwards and backwards. By the end of the course you will be able to kayak safely.

All equipment hire, course materials (logbooks, buoyancy aid & wetsuits etc.) and lunch are included in the course fee.

Practical skills covered include; carrying and launching, forwards paddling, steering and controlling and recovering the boat.

Rescue skills covered include; capsizing, being rescued by another paddler and emptying boats.

Safety and group skills covered include; personal risk management, awareness of others, a trip of either 3 km or one hour duration, basic first aid awareness, access requirements and environmental impacts.

Equipment Hire

The Kayak equipment is available for hire or use by members, non-members must pay £10 for a half day. We require kayakers to go out in groups of no less than 3 so that they can perform self rescues.

Membership

Membership of DSWC entitles members to reduced course fees as well as free use of Centre craft (as appropriate to members skill and prevailing weather conditions). Membership details are available on the net and in the Centre foyer.
