The direct assessment is for experienced power boat drivers looking to gain their International Certificate of Competence for British flagged vessels.
The assessment takes the form of a series of maneuvers to be demonstrated on the water, followed by an oral test on issues of navigation and safety, from which a written record is held by the centre.
It should be recognised that an ICC can also be applied for off the basis of an RYA Power Boat Level 2, as this falls under the list of Acceptable Evidence of Competence. The direct assessment should not be seen as an instructed course.
It must also be recognised that while a British ICC will cover you on British flagged vessels all over the world, different countries may have different regulations in regards to their own vessels. Anyone gaining an ICC is advised to investigate this before booking the assessment in order to make sure it is valid for the application they wish to use it for.
In addition to this, Inland ICC assessments must be accompanied with a CEVNI test before the RYA will process the paperwork. Please be aware that ICC assessments run by the centre only qualify for vessels up to 10m in length.

The CEVNI test is for power boat drivers looking to gain their inland International Certificate of Competence for British flagged vessels, primarily to take them on the inland waterways of continental Europe and the UK.
The CEVNI test is a written test taking 1 hour, course materials are available from the RYA website, and the syllabus is detailed in our CEVNI download.
There is no associated course with the CEVNI test, potential candidates are instead invited to read the RYA book on the subject, and to try practise papers prior to taking the test. Additional tuition can be booked on a one to one basis.
