DLR announces first Celebrate 2012 winner

Docklands Light Railway today announces the first winner of its Celebrate 2012 campaign, aimed at sharing all the unique events, festivities and celebrations taking place in the Docklands community throughout 2012. The first winner is the ‘Youth Afloat Dragon Boat Challenge’, which submitted its entry on the DLR’s interactive timeline.

Launched in February, the Celebrate 2012 events timeline is open for members of the public and businesses to submit events and celebrations taking place in east London which sit alongside major public activities such as the 2012 Olympic Games, the Diamond Jubilee and the DLR’s 25thanniversary. As the first winner, the Youth Afloat Dragon Boat Challenge will receive a three-course lunch for two at the Four Seasons Hotel London at Canary Wharf, which they have chosen to raffle off on the day of the challenge.

This Challenge, to be held on 10 July at the Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre, will see teams racing 250 metres in heats which culminate in a six boat final. A BBQ will also be available on the day, with money raised going towards the Youth Programme.
Centre Manager Judi Sanders says: “We are delighted to receive this prize to raffle off at the Youth Afloat Dragon Boat Challenge, as we receive all of our support from fundraising, individual volunteers and corporate volunteer projects. This is a great community event as it’s a really fun family day out and an opportunity for children to learn how to sail and have fun in a safe, sporting environment.”

Other standout events posted on the Celebrate 2012 timeline so far include:

The Cycle Pilgrimage from Canterbury Cathedral to St Alfrege is a three-day cycling adventure that begins on 19 April. 2012 is a special year for St Alfege Church as it commemorates the thousandth anniversary of the martyrdom of its patron, St Alfege.

The Custom House and Canning Town Spring Festival, held on 12 May, is a community event to celebrate local talent and share information about the range of local services throughout East London. There will be live performances from local groups and a talent quest.

On the 21 and 22 July the BT River of Music will perform as part of the London 2012 Festival. Londoners and visitors to the city can enjoy the free performances, showcasing world-class music from across the globe, as well as emerging British talent

On 25 July – 12 August some twenty tall ships will be plying a daily scenic route along the Thames for the inaugural Sail Royal Greenwich. Taking in many of the famous London highlights, the route begins at Royal Arsenal Pier, Woolwich, passes the O2 and Greenwich’s historic buildings and culminates at Tower Bridge.

Lunch for two in the Four Seasons Hotel London at Canary Wharf can be won every month by submitting an event or celebration to the timeline for a chance to win. Ten entrants per month will also be chosen at random to receive a box of Celebrations chocolates.

For those wanting to celebrate 2012 with DLR, a submission form can be found on www.dlr.co.uk/2012 which allows users to post their event details and upload a photo.

Thanks to the British Canoe Union’s charitable arm the Canoe Foundation Docklands have been able to purchase 4 new Perception Fox slalom kayaks. These kayaks will be used to give our youth members training for events such as the London Youth Games and will help to get more children excited about kayak slalom.

Straight out of the wrapper and onto the water the Foxes were being put through there paces by London Youth Games hopefuls from the London Nautical school and were very well received!
Our old and tired changing rooms are soon to be a thing of the past with work starting on the new facilities this week. They will be clean, bright and functional, a much needed change for the Centre.

We’re very excited to say that building works have begun today and will be continuing over the next six to eight weeks.

So……what does this mean to our members and visitors?

The Centre will remain open during this period, however as the workmen will need to shut off the boiler, running water is not guaranteed at all times and the showers will be out of action for the duration.

Please be understanding over the next few weeks, as it will all be worth it in two month’s time.

Award funded by Inspired Facilities, Sport England and Isle of Dogs Community Foundation (IDCF)
