The Centre Office is open on weekdays throughout the year from 9am to 4pm.
The Centre is open for watersports and general use every Sunday throughout the year from 10am to 4pm and after Easter, until October (daylight permitting) we open every evening from Monday to Friday from 6.00pm until dusk. On Saturdays we run courses and training. The Centre may be opened at other times for watersports by prior arrangement.
The Centre is occasionally booked for exclusive use. We limit these bookings and advanced warning is given in our newsletters and on the website.
We try to keep the water open for members during the events but you may be restricted to certain areas of the dock so as not to interfere with the other activities.
The Centre has the best of both worlds with direct access to the Millwall Dock and the River Thames.
The Millwall Outer Dock is 25 acres of sheltered water, providing a perfect environment for beginners to safely learn a new water sport. The water is frequently tested and conforms to the mandatory levels laid down by the E.C.
The Centre provides a popular venue and arena for events, with the bar and balcony giving view of the water and there is plenty of room on the site for additional land based activities.
Across the road is a slipway which provides the Centre with direct access onto the River Thames so we can extend the water based activities onto a more exciting and challenging stretch of water.
We provide all the specialist equipment you will need including a personal buoyancy aid so all you need to bring with you is a change of clothes, suitable footwear and a towel.
Although watersports sometimes require a degree of physical fitness, we are able to cater for almost all abilities. If you have any doubt concerning your ability, please ask the Centre for advice.
While the water is being used it is always under supervision of highly qualified members of the watersports staff who are trained in water safety, first aid and lifesaving
There is a growing number of disabled users and we provide full disabled access with a lift to the first floor and disabled toilets on both floors. We also have a number of specialist boats including Access 303WS dinghies and 2.4 mini-yachts.
The dock has an East, West aspect which takes advantage of the prevailing wind and provides good, safe sailing.
We have a selection of fleets of boats to suit all abilities.
For two or more: 4 Wayfarer Dinghies , 24 Bosun Dinghies ,6 Omegas ,3 Topper Treze plus access to a selection of other varied craft.
Single handed include: 12 - Toppers, 12 - Lasers and 6 - 2.4 yachts.
We organise Royal Yachting Association (RYA) courses to learn to sail each weekend during the summer and in the late summer we arrange the more advanced courses. We can also arrange private tuition for those who would prefer.
We are open on Saturdays throughout the summer for Race Training and improvers giving you the opportunity to develop you technique and pit your wits against other sailors.
During the summer months we organise a series of River Cruises on the Thames, exploring upriver past The Tower of London and through the bridges to Westminster or downstream past Greenwich to the Thames Barrier stopping for lunch at a convenient riverside pub.
On Wednesday evenings throughout the Summer we organise ‘Twilight Sailing’. It originated in Western Australia and is primarily a social event with the aim of introducing people to sailing but most of all to have fun. We will race a simple course in our dinghies, which can hold up to 5 people. There are no rules, except you must not collide with other boats or the dock wall!
In Australia the race rules include the requirement to drink a 'tinny' at every mark ! We feel that this could prove excessive in the space of the dock but the tradition of 'tinny' drinking will be expected after the racing.
The first race is at about 6.30pm, last race at dusk The evening costs £20 per head (£15 for members) which includes a 'tinnie', a place in a boat, an BBQ which you can visit as many times as you wish and occasional live music to keep the party atmosphere going.
Why not bring some friends and book a boat !
Up to 20 people paddling side by side in a boat forty foot long (or 10 in a twenty foot boat). A drummer, sitting in the prow, beating time, a steerer at the stern with a giant paddle, all working together as one - this is dragon boating.
Dragon boat racing is a unique watersport, it requires no previous experience and caters for all ages and abilities in one crew, male and female. Above all it’s great fun!
We have become one of the premiere racing centres in the country, with a fleet of six matching full size and six matching half size race boats based at the Centre .
If you want to get involved you can either join one of the many teams who train at the centre or even form your own. We provide expert training and advice and you can compete in one of the many events to be held at the Centre this year.
We are one of the main centres for ‘traditional rowing’ in London. We have two Thames Cutters based at the Centre which are rowed by a crew of 6 plus a cox. These are a traditional design which provide a safe, yet fast, rowing boat, ideal for both experienced rowers or beginners. We organise a programme of events and trips leading up to The Great River Race in September.
We are a have British Canoe Union (BCU) approved instructors and offer a full programme of activities and courses using a range of canoes and kayaks. Including white water trips and expeditions on the Thames and other local rivers. All instructors are BCU qualified.
We run RYA power boat courses and are able to offer you your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) This is now required if you wish to navigate on European waters . Powerboat training is increasingly seen as very important in the UK and essential if you are taking a boat abroad. We can train you in a variety of boats including fast planing and displacement boats.
We have regular Sunday daytime and Monday evening racing for those who wish to take part in some friendly competitive sailing. Please contact the centre for details.
When the evenings get darker and we are unable to use the water we organise a variety of classes over the winter months including; Navigation Classes (RYA Dayskipper, Yachtmaster and Yachtmaster Ocean)- Radio Operators certificate - First Aid at Sea - Diesel maintenance .
